This was the hardest thing I've ever done, but if I even say, "I'll never do this again!" I probably will.

I'm not sure if I'm completely happy (going to give it a few hours before submitting them) and I broke all sorts of rules (I Fail at Sentences) but I made it, I finished, and there's something in there about growing as a writer/person by doing something difficult like this. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] railway and [livejournal.com profile] cupcakemonster for doing betaish stuff for me.

Merging (1,900 words)
Seifer/Zell, PG/worksafe
Pieces of a relationship. Collection of 50 sentences. Also on AO3.

#01 — Motion
He always marvels that Seifer can dodge every blow (physical and verbal) he wings in his direction like he's faster than light and lighter than air.

#02 — Cool
Zell is anything but calm and collected, but sometimes when Seifer pisses him off with some smartass remark, he feels strangely at peace with the world around himself as if the anger is his solace.

#03 — Young

It takes Zell weeks without GF to remember sandy days and little kids playing in water and meadow but the memories that come back most vividly are of Seifer pushing him and down and then helping him up so he could push him down yet again.

#04 — Last
He was the last one to forgive him and yet at the same time the first; he forgave the actions but it took him years to forgive for the sentiments behind it.

#05 — Wrong
The look on Zell's face is torn between murderous and hurt: the fact that he's the one that puts those looks there daily makes him have regrets for the first time.

#06 — Gentle
Neither of them can be defined with anything less than severity, but when they dance around each other, the blows are as soft to them as they are painful to onlookers.

#07 — One
The first thing Seifer did as the head of the Disciplinary Committee was to stake out the entrance to the cafeteria; when Zell ran by, the joy he felt giving his first detention slip to the bouncy kid was addicting.

#08 — Thousand

It's not until afterward Zell regrets the chances he had and was too stupid to see.

#09 — King
Seifer tried to teach Zell chess and he was appalled at how terrible he was; Zell wore every feeling and plan and intention on his face and Seifer had never had more fun with the game than with a man who couldn't even remember how to move his king.

#10 — Learn
Seifer had taught him things he never expected to learn—dignity and superiority—but Zell knew he'd never quite be able to catch them in the precision Seifer managed everyday.

#11 — Blur
He spent his free hour after classes watching him in the training center, fists flying, face spread with a smile he could barely see because of his speed, and Seifer thought that if he could move that fast with his blade, he would be invincible.

#12 — Wait
He sat at a table behind some bushes until Seifer returned from his first trip to the Fire Cavern and wasn't surprised that Seifer had a bounce in his step and a smirk on his face; what did surprise him was that Seifer looked right at him as he walked by and gave him a real smile.

#13 — Change
Seifer had pressed the correct change for the snack machine in his hand, saying, watch out or you'll lose that girly figure but instead of getting angry, Zell shared his snack with him, in the quiet of the dormitory hallway.

#14 — Command
It's the lump in his throat that won't go away when he sees Seifer again, the man that demands attention even from the lowest he's ever been and cannot be broken.

#15 — Hold
When she died, Zell cried for the first time in years and neither of them ever talked about the tears on Seifer's shirt or the bruises on Zell's shoulders shaped like fingertips.

#16 — Need
Zell thinks he needs this, needs this like fucking breathing; as his fist connects Seifer goes sprawling back on the ground, grinning up at him even when he's bleeding.

#17 — Vision

He sees how it could've been if the war had never happened, but when he's pushed into the mattress he thinks that any other ending wouldn't be as good as this.

#18 — Attention
Zell knows that sometimes he purposefully pushes Seifer, tests his boundaries; he's spent more than one evening in detention for it and he'll never admit it was worth it.

#19 — Soul
He has thoughts sometimes that make him question who he really is inside and then Seifer will make fun of him for mooning; he figures it's more fun to put his hands on Seifer than to analyze the person he's already become.

#20 — Picture
The photo is slid under his door while he's getting dressed and when he picks it up, the handwriting on the back (I knew it, you sly dog!) makes him wince but the image of him and Zell makes him grin.

#21 — Fool
Seifer kept pushing him and challenging him and daring him to leave, even if he could never say, please stay, so he has to relearn how to compartmentalize again when Zell finally takes his advice.

#22 — Mad
It surprises Zell when he discovers the real way to tell when Seifer is truly angry is when he refuses to touch him at all, even to hit back with harsh words or fists.

#23 — Child
He was very much a child of Garden, the darkness Garden had fostered inside of him the basis of who he was; the only time he forgot this was in the warmth of Zell's house, his mother, and his bed.

#24 — Now

His hands are everywhere, and he's dragging out through bloody lips now, Seifer, NOW and he thinks as the first aid lessons he was given pour into his head that he's never been more terrified.

#25 — Shadow
When they stand on the beach together, still dripping, Zell watches their shadows stretch down the sand and merge at the edges and wonders why it took him so long to figure it out.

#26 — Goodbye

Seifer's door is shut against him for the first time in years.

#27 — Hide
They never talk about: the late nights, fist fights over pillows, the fact that his room is full of Zell's things and how they feel when they wake up next to each other.

#28 — Fortune
By the time he is nineteen he is rich and happy and angry and hey, that was MINE; he has a lot of money, too.

#29 — Safe
After he does the unthinkable he hides, but he knows no matter where he goes Seifer will find him and his prospects never looked worse.

#30 — Ghost
Zell recalls his absence at normal times: in the cafeteria, in the training center and in the infirmary where they had placed each other so much but also recalls his absence at odd times, like the middle of the night, when he wakes up sweating and crying out from nightmares.

#31 — Book

When he said, I didn't know you could read, chicken-wuss, Zell hadn't meant for his tackle to take out three cadets and a bookshelf—but it had been worth it.

#32 — Eye
He sports the black eye for a little over a week and the humiliation is tempered by the fact that Zell acts like he did nothing wrong.

#33 — Never

Give me a break, chicken-wuss, you'll never do it, he had said, and he learned early that Zell would do almost anything he dared him to do just so he wouldn't have to be the one to back down.

#34 — Sing
The knowledge that Seifer hums in the shower is warmer than the late morning sunlight heating his back and more intimate than his clothes sprawled across the floor with others that belong to the man in the shower.

#35 — Sudden
It's the feeling that grips him in the middle of an exam, staring at the back of his head and the way his neck curves into his shoulder and he thinks: well, fuck.

#36 — Stop
He knows how to push all of Zell's buttons and in doing so he never can help from smiling whether genuine or sarcastic; what gives him pause isn't that he does it, but that he knows every single one.

#37 — Time
He doesn't think about time in the same way anymore (after the absence it becomes harder) so he measures the days in hard and soft touches, insults, and quiet whispers in the dark.

#38 — Wash
So he is surprised when Seifer does find him, still wet (ohmygod this towel is NOT big enough) from his shower, and presses him against the cool tile of the showers and does the unthinkable right back.

#39 — Torn
Zell had never compared his friends to one another, but one too many shushed conversations and closed off faces makes him wonder which matters more: the man that is honest or friends that are not.

#40 — History

The first time they see each other after time compression Zell feels awkward for two seconds before Seifer insults the floppy hat Selphie had jammed on his head and Zell thinks, but doesn't say: he's going to be okay.

#41 — Power
He says without words what he's been dying to say for too long, gives everything he is to a man that could destroy him: this is what I want and this is what you?ve given me and please, please, plea—.

#42 — Bother
When everyone else has sent him away for being annoying, he can always count on Seifer to meet him head on, to never tire out, to never run out of quips and hard knocks.

#43 — God
He doesn't define the world in terms of deities, but rather by himself; so he's surprised when his first experience with faith comes from the sort that Zell has in him.

#44 — Wall

Seifer has walls that not even Zell wants to break down—he's too scared to admit aloud that he never wants to get through forcibly—he wants to be allowed inside.

#45 — Naked
When he locked Seifer outside his room naked and heard a bunch of girls squeal, he knew he'd won that particular bet.

#46 — Drive
When Xu spends an hour lecturing them about proper use of Garden equipment after they had wrecked a Garden car, Zell's mind is more focused on the memory of Seifer laughing with him instead of at him, and it's a hot feeling in his chest he never wants to lose.

#47 — Harm
I can't believe you broke your nose on a door, chicken-wuss, he had said, and Zell had glared, shouted and caused his face to hurt all over again but he didn't miss that Seifer hung around until Dr. Kadowaki made everyone else leave, where he thought he couldn't be seen.

#48 — Precious
When he's assigned an essay over things he cherishes the most and why, it takes him a week to decide to list his ma, his training sessions and hotdogs; at the end when he adds Seifer's name he stares at the paper and realizes what his instructor meant when he said the project was about revelations.

#49 — Hunger

Zell never comments on the fact that when they have lunch together, Seifer brings two servings without hesitation, because he knows Zell will steal his second after his two servings; Zell knows he's fine with that.

#50 — Believe
He clenches his fists and thinks that fuckin' bastard and for the first time he turns and walks away; Seifer says, no, chicke—Zell and Zell stops because the catch in Seifer's voice isn't a bluff.

Yay! I'm very proud of you. And yes, you do end up growing as a writer. Growing more bitter! AH HA HA. Sorry. XD

But still, it's GOOD to do things you find hard. 'Cause it builds character. Just think of all the character you must have now.

(Psst, hint hint, now you can write more lovely AU. Stars! Heaven!)

My job is killing me. Literally, I think. Maybe I should just quit and write; at least I'd be poor and happy instead of not-so-poor and miserable. ^___^;;;

As for that story? WOE. I can't even think straight when I get home, much less work on things that have, you know, plot.

Oh, the gay stripper fic!? It's at beta right now, and it's 6,000 words. I could give you a sneak preview of the unedited version. Hee!

Well, I just had to slide the reminder in there, you know. ;) Just so it doesn't get totally forgotten and one day when you feel better you will be able to continue! :D

*pwned*

Ah, my favorite FF8 pairing. The world needs more snippy fun Seifer/Zellness. ♥

Let' see, I really adored "Motion" and "Young" amused me terribly for some reason. ♥ "One" totally made me giggle and "Blur" rocked hard. "Wait" gave me waffy cute feelings. And "Mad" really blew me away. "Child" was nicely understated and "Shadow" owned in its simplicity. "Book" and "Naked" totally made me laugh out loud. "Bother" rocked so much.

And okay, so it probably would be simplier to just say I really loved these, I think you did a good job and shower you with waffies and fun congratulatory statements for finishing. ♥ Booyaka baby, this made me day.

No, really, I liked knowing which ones stood out. Some of the ones you mentioned were ones I thought wouldn't work at all for other people. I've discovered that everyone's idea of this pairing is SO different sometimes in what works and what doesn't that I spend way too long going, "AUGH!" at myself because I've never written anything for them. There's been a drabble I wrote, then these, and apparently I'm doing the high school AU thing, which will prompty get me jettisoned from the fandom. xD

Also: WAFFLES. Thank you. I'm glad these worked for you (made your day? Best feeling ever! *is a little shy now*)

Wow, I don't think I've come across people who see the pairing that differently. Usually it's just rival slash with a hint of UST, a bundle of acceptance, and maybe a few romantic notions here and there. *pokes* What other ways have you seen it written? (Besides the purplely sappy romantic way?) I read just about everything for Seifer/Zell since there's not that much compared to the other pairings.

And I'm not sure I saw the High School AU? *tilts head*

But yes, squee, I'm really happy you wrote these and I think you did a great job with them. Especially since the ones I mentioned really hit the spot and left an impression which is the way it should be.

(And wai, you turned my waffies into waffles. XD)

Well, I've seen two specific sorts: ones who massacre the charatcers and slot them into stereotypes. They don't like the idea that anything about a relationship between Seifer and Zell could be violent. The other side seems to be the exact opposite. Then there's the ones that fall in the middle (like [livejournal.com profile] grayout, who makes me want to eat his talent). I'm not sure if it's just because this pairing on livejournal is new or what--I know on ff.net it is makes my eyes BLEED.

....apparently I was hungry! I had waffles on the brain. I have to admit, right after I posted that I wanted some and I gave my waffle iron away months ago. WOE.

And yes, my high school AU. *is super nervous* I'm about to post the link on my journal. WOE.

Stereotype fic runs rampant in FF8 which makes sense because most of the characters are stereotypical. I mean, they all share the same childhood/backstory, almost of them have the same job, they're all about the same age and they all share the exact same experiences through the course of the game. Really the only thing they have going for them to differentiate is personality.

And ne, *tilts head* have you read many Seifer/Zell fics or just started poking around lj or? (If you haven't happened across this site before... Noire Sensus (http://noiresensus.com/ff8/library_index.html) has four pages of fic for the pairing and most everything that was on ff.net/aff.net with the exception of FlowerGirl's story "If Only" which is one of the fandom epics.) Most Seifer/Zell fics have them still being themselves but just strip away any sense of malice from their fights which is what I find works the best for me. Flowery sappy makes me blink although the emo/angst fic can be well done at times.

I'm about to post the link on my journal. WOE.

*pats* You can do it!

Oh! Thank you for that link. I don't think I've seen that. *bookmarks*

I think I'm a sometime fan of stereotypes, but I'm spoiled! I think years ago before I left the fandom there were loads of people looking past the stereotypes and now hardly anyone is writing for FFVIII to even write USING the stereotypes--or maybe I'm not looking in the right places.

Most of my experience with Seifer/Zell stuff is on ff.net and livejournal--one being rife with the bad stuff and the other sort of lacking. I never realized there was a section of the fandom even INTO it. I spent the majority of 2005 all by myself. xD Little did I know.

And I have taken the leap and posted the story. Now I wait to have my fandom membership card revoked. Heh.

Noire Sensus is a kick ass slash archive orgranized backwards and frontwards. The cool thing is they're still updating so they basically have any story that's worth reading hosted on their site so hopefully you won't have to touch ff.net again.

Well FF8 fandom's cooled down a lot because the games been out for years. Some of the prolific gen/het authors are still around but there hasn't been anyone too new to the fandom. Out of the past six months... maybe about four new authors worth reading or so. But fandom has come a long way, hell I remember when only one person was writing LagunaxSquall and back before Nida got slashed with any body...

And *squee* The world needs more Seifer/Zell fans. *twirls about happily*

*goes off to read High School AU fic* So... is this where I tell you that FF8 High School AUs are pretty commonplace and that nearly every roleplay uses High School as a basis so it's not as outlandish and brain breaking as you think? (Since really, Garden's practically a big high school anyway.)

Some of the stories at that archive scare me; like, plots, yay! Sex, maybe not so much. I would share some of my favorite quotes, but, I'm still a little amused/horrified/giggly.

It's really my goal to find every good/promising author on ff.net and urge them toward livejournal (okay, so there's my secret plan revealed!). I don't have the problems everyone else does with ff.net, mainly because I've only ever had to suffer the story deletion curse once. So hanging out there to find promising authors is sort of habit, because I mean, someone needs to convert them! Then again, I'm of the mindset that new writers to any fandom need to be fostered. If they're not so great, that's what reviews are for. If they don't want to take advice/concrit, well, that's when they should be written off. Everyone has the ability to improve, some just need some help doing so. It's the ones that don't want it we should poke. And now I'm like a "The More You Know" commercial, so I'll stop! XD

Before I left the fandom, I wrote Nida/Laguna once. It was a multiple chapter thing, probably really really bad. That was back in 2002. So that really amuses me. xD I wish I still had it.

And it's not that I'm nervous about their not being a lot of high school AUs. It's more the fact I started the project in order to insult the horrible, horrible high school AUs out there and I am terrified mine will invaribly fall into the bad category because of writing/characterizations problems.

And I'm definitely a Seifer/Zell fan, since I have another game-based story about them in progress right now that's sort of (okay, REALLY) long, plus something I'm calling the Weedyverse, where Ultimecia decides to take a nap instead of compressing time and Seifer passes his exam and the game events don't really happen. So there's a bunch of team-fics I'm planning. *geeks out* This pairing sucks you in!

A lot of Seifer/Zell does have hints of a threesome or love triangle with Squall so it's interesting to see. One of my favorites is Deena's "Desire Stone" because it's such an amusing and argumentative PWP.

Well, I'll definetly rec one Seifer/Zell author off the top of my head. Esse (http://www.fanfiction.net/u/16322/) at ff.net does some kick ass stuff and I don't beleive she's on livejournal just yet. (Hint, hint.) Years ago, I used to do the same thing with ff.net only with mailing lists instead of livejournal. It was a great way to meet new people.

I have to confess, I never understood Nida slash... mostly because he didn't get much characterization and just stood around next to a phallic symbol steering Garden all day. ;-) And man, I wish you still had that fic too since I read everything with Laguna despite pairings and premsies. (Strangely, I rather like Laguna/Seifer which is just so wtf.)

And by the by? Your high school AU is amusing me so far because not only are you spoofing High School AUs but you're also spoofing stripper fic. *dead* I so wasn't expecting stripper fic.

Okay... I'll bite, why is it called the "Weedyverse"? *tilts head and blink at you*

*giggles* That's actually one of the ones that has the line WEEPING COCK and I laughed my butt off for fifteen minutes. Okay, I just generally like seeing that phrase, because, because--omgz. xD I have no brain power even when I think about it. *snorts*

Haha, yes! I will recruit people to the conversion cause. xD Excellent. I actually got into the fandom through a newsletter...that's been so long ago. Wow. I'm feeling sentimental.

Oh, well, NPCs are fun to mess around with. I write a lot of Xu and Martine based stuff. A lot of other people do it better than me, because they're able to show the other characters really well. It turns into a character study of the other character. That's what I was doing with the Nida/Laguna stuff. I will never ever ever think of Nida again without thinking of the steering stick. Never. Again.

Are you saying you've read a lot of FFVIII stripper fic? xD Because that would be amazing. Well, at least to me. I'm thinking that eventually my giggles over the fact that Zell will continue to believe Seifer is a stripper will wear off for other people and I will continue to giggle and people will just me, "Wow, she's officially on crack."

Weedyverse? Well, because the game is pretty much a big time loop, if the time loop doesn't happen, all the players in their positions are sort of left where they are. And when I thought about that and what would happen to Garden, they probably wouldn't be forced to figure out how to move it. Therefore, um....weeds? It's really not clever at ALL. Garden? Weeds? Um. *slinks off, shamed*

I especially like #3: There's something so sad and also funny about Seifer pushing Zell down and then helping him up just so he can push him down again.

I really enjoy how Seifer quietly admires Zell in #11.

And I love how in #12 Zell thinks he's unseen too, but Seifer catches him at his spying.

#25 is just gorgeous too.

#31 is just cute and amusing.

#33 I really enjoy a Zell who won't ever ever back down from a dare. That sounds very like Zell.

#43 is very touching. And I believe in a Seifer who is needy like that.

#47 is sweet as well. I like how Seifer conceals gthe fact that he wants to stay behind and visit with Zell.

#50 is even more powerful than #48. Perhaps because it isn't hard to imagine Zell being passionate about things, but Seifer's neediness always gets me right in the gut.

These are lovely sentences and the story you tell with them is a wonderful unfolding of a relationship between Seifer and Zell.

Nitpicking:
#6: I think I would write "severity" instead of "severe."
#7 I think you need "the" before "bouncy kid."
#16 I think you need a semi-colon before "as his fist."
#46 It sounds like Xu wrecked the car. Maybe change it like this? "When Xu spends hours lecturing them about proper use of Garden equipment after they've wrecked a car . . ."

Now that's I've been several days going, "omg she's reviewing my stuff!" and fangirling all over the place, I think I'm sane enough to respond to everything! Thanks for your suggested changes--they all helped.

#25 has really become my favorite out of all of these. I really want to write a story based on that, just because I think it would be amazing. But then I worry about it losing something if I do. I've been fighting the urge to expand a lot of these into stories, but don't want to ruin a good thing. Who knows!

So there are people who see Seifer as super needy, but unable to really communicate it, because that's not the type of person he is? Because really, I was terrified with some of the ones you mentioned. I'm like, "No one will buy this!" Glad to learn it worked!

Thank you so much for leaving your thoughts! <3

I do like the way you write Seifer's character. I like that you've postulated a *reason* for his excessive behaviour and I think it's a good plausible reason.

Also, I see no reason why you should be afraid of writing stories based on these sentences. I think it's great that you managed to inspire yourself with your own work. :) I don't think that doing so would ruin these wonderful sentences either.

YOU'RE late? Okay, let's see, this comment was left in NOVEMBER 2006, I'm just seeing it in JANUARY 2007. I totally fail.

But thank you you for commenting (and by that I mean lsdhflskhdfledas GLEE!!). Man, I'll never get tired of knowing I made a Seifer/Zell fan happy. WE DESERVE LOTS OF HAPPINESS.

Ahaha, that was scary. I was just rereading another comment from you in response to one of my other reviews and this one came in. XD!

Hey, at least you respond. There're plenty who would just let the comments sit. ♥

YAY HAPPINESS. ::grin:: (Your icon always makes me smile. Hee.)

Clearly this makes me half of a creepy e-stalker. ALSO: psychic! XD

Aww, I always try to respond to people to thank them for taking the time to comment. Our fandom is very gun-shy with comments so when people do I want to make an effort to say, "HAY LET'S MAKE OUT!" or, less creepily, "thanks for commenting!" Commenting is HARD WORK. I've gotta show the love. ♥

My ultimate goal is: make Seifer/Zell fans everywhere BEST FRIENDS. It's a big one, but totally attainable!

::grins:: I wouldn't vote for creepy, but I'll go with psychic!

Ahaha. Showing love is good. And the writing is harder work than the commenting. ::waggles a finger::

Oh, that would be nice. And it isn't as big as it seems -- there really aren't that many of us (that step forward, anyway).

This is amazing. It really is. Seifer/Zell is to me like crack is to some people; but a lot of people shrug the whole idea off. And those that DO write it usually have stereotypes and cliche' story elements pumped through the whole thing, which really ruins the experience.

But I've never seen the pairing looked at from so many different points of view at once. The whole thing seems simple at first; 50 words, describing the relationship. But at the same time, you showed just how complex and deep Seifer and Zell's relationship could be. That's one of the things I love about the pairing, and you captured the whole idea perfectly.

I say, kudos to you!! Thank you for sharing this marvelous piece of fiction with us. And may I remind you that you rock.

Thank you so much!

Yes, I get that exact reaction from a lot of people, who say, "wow, that is complete crack!" I might just have over thought it a little bit, but if I think about Seifer and Zell as individuals, it makes so much sense from where Zell is concerned, since so much of Zell's personality was shaped by Seifer. He's a huge influence for Zell in how Zell sees himself. At least, that's what I got from the game. People have told me I'm crazy for that, though. XD

I sometimes wonder what makes the stereotypes so bad, because I don't often get them in other pairings I like a lot. But Seifer/Zell was totally a lesson in learning how to HOLD MY TONGUE and not insult things like glorified rape and healing buttsex! HARD.

So wow! I'm glad you liked these. You pretty much hit on why on I love them together, how complex it would be for them to be together. I like depth and they have LOTS of it when it's done right, which I spend a lot of time agonizing over.

And! You're very welcome! Thanks again for totally awesome feedback, I appreciate it a lot. :D
