Still not dead! Still working at $dayjob. Just a little over a month left and I will be free and back in school for my last semester.

There was an interview meme going around that I played in when I thought I would have time to write entries and stories. That'll teach me to be an optimist about my time.

Questions! Answers! This got long and full of navel, this is why I never post, because I go on and on and on and no one cares! )

New in my world!

1. I purchased a Nook color and am now saving for the SD cards I am going to buy and theme with different fandoms. All Final Fantasy fic on this one, all Inception fic on that one, and on and on. This is a great use of the summer funds I've been earning. ♥ to authors who archive on AO3, you make my breaks and lunches at work much more entertaining!

2. I also changed my email address after years and years. heyheyrenay@gmail.com is me now, although I will still use my old address for OTW work. I won't ignore anyone still emailing me about non-OTW stuff at my bottle.of.shine address, I am just more likely to email you from the new one. :) I will also not be around on chat as much on the old address, except for my chair office hours that will start "officially" soon. In about a month I am going to have more free time so feel free to add and poke me if you're inclined to that sort of thing. ♥

3. In August I get to go meet [personal profile] general_jinjur (and maybe some others, as well!) I AM SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS, even if I have had about six anxiety attacks concerning driving there. There are these routes but none provide information about scary drivers, horrible detours, or Chance of Wildlife. I am unsure about how I am going to manage it, but have been told by several people that I will be fine. Let's hope I don't have to say I told you so. >.>

4. Chris visited and it was awesome and I saw him every day he was here! That is some kind of record. :D I promise we will come to New Orleans soon, bb (you mentioned Halloween, maybe the offer will still be open?). ♥

I am sorry I have been so terrible about comments and reading and commenting on reading! I hope to be better this month. I hope everyone is having a great July, and for those who have winter right now, um, please send some of that my way, it is hot like the dickens here. ♥
AO3 is running the April Showers Challenge where every day they focus on a different fandom and invite people to come upload their work. :) Any fandom is welcome, definitely, not just the ones being highlighted. Come preserve your fanworks with us! Now is a great time, since AO3 user subscriptions have arrived! ♥

April 12th is Final Fantasy day! I found three things I wasn't embarrassed by to upload (score!). I have a few invites if anyone needs them, just let me know. <3 There is another fandom close to my heart coming up soon and I am ridiculously excited. :D

Inception Kink Fest happened and I basically missed it! THAT'S OKAY, I GUESS, THANKS FOR NOTHING UNIVERSITY. I have learned a lot about kink...just reading the master list. :D Inception fandom has single-handedly doubled the kinks I apparently enjoy? Self-knowledge is awesome. There's SO MUCH...and my to-read tag is insane (I really hope I am not the only person who has one of these that's over 500). I'll catch up...in June? At which point there will still be two months unaccounted for. I DON'T KNOW HOW TO DEAL WITH A FANDOM THIS LARGE/ACTIVE. /o\

✦ I am considering an ereader for fic purposes (and possibly school book purposes for next semester, ugh I hate reading hard copy with a passion which is going to make my American Indian class super interesting). This is possibly the most self-indulgent purchase I've considered for myself in years, but I am going back to work soon and would really like to just have a bunch of reading material available on a device bigger than my iPhone screen. I don't want a Kindle, and I need something that can read .html and .pdf files and one that could do the files that AO3 exports works in would be great, too. Does anyone have any suggestions?

blah blah school paper topic, tears, etc. ) So I am sorry if I am not around very much or suddenly vanish when I am. :( I am best catchable on bottle.of.shine@gmail.com on Gtalk, though, if you need me for something (I HAVE SO MANY PROJECTS) or Tom Hardy suddenly acquires a Twitter account and you need me for EMERGENCY FLAILING. SOMEONE BETTER ALERT ME IF THAT HAPPENS, I AM NOT KIDDING.

✦ Spanish exam today where the professor seriously put questions on the test from a story he didn't even give us. :| My blood pressure!

✦ I AM BORING, SORRY. I want to be writing, not studying, but there's only three more weeks. Then: no much writing! SO MUCH.
✦ I would have recs today since it's the end of the week but I have called off reading any because I need to be reading books for school. This is so sad because there are awesome things happening and I can't go read them! MY HEART. I am so jealous of everyone right now, why did I put all this off. :( I have a Women Writers exam on Tuesday and I am less than excited because this is the first exam I will have with this professor. I have been told she is difficult! It's pretty much normal for me to fail the first exam with a new professor, because I will study incorrectly or focus in the wrong places. Then when I get the exam, I go, "FUCK." in my head and then vomit lots of words hoping to cover how much I suck.

✦ OTW has new servers! To get them all set up, we have to have some downtime and during the downtime we're hosting a name the server festival. I am pretty excited about this! Directly from the post: we would LOVE some names from sources not in English. Gaming/anime/manga fans, this is us! :D You can learn about what all our new machines are going to be doing at Meet the Machines in case you want to get all thematic.

ALSO, the art is so adorable! ♥

On a personal note, I am happy because this means I can wrangle again. The interface has been slow for me, to the point where I can't even check things for admin issues on some days. I think it's a problem on my end more than a problem with our awesome first servers that have been superhero-levels of awesome with the help of the fab Systems team, but still. A Wrangling Co-Chair that cannot wrangle is not very useful. I am so thankful to fandom for giving us resources to level up!

[personal profile] regann is doing a really neat Romantic Comedy Countdown to celebrate Valentine's day. It is so cool and her posts about the movies really interesting. Her choices aren't what you'd expected—she's gone back to the early 20th century and it's really fascinating. I have added lots of movies to my Netflix queue.

Final Fantasy Kiss Battle is still on! There were three pages when I last looked, and I bookmarked tons of prompts I want to write. BUT I HAVE TO WAIT. That's okay, other people are writing and drawing awesome things. *jealous*

What other cool stuff is happening out on the internet that I can't enjoy because I am drowning in medieval literature? *cries bitter tears* Time to go back to the word mines...

I hope everyone has a good, procrastination-less start start to their week. ♥
I like how I don't realize these things until someone points them out. ._.

Curious, I looked up all the humanoid main-party characters in the main-series games from Final Fantasy IV to Final Fantasy XII, disregarding characters such as Fran, who is more than fifty years old but looks much younger on account of not being human.

The ages of the male characters ranged from five to seventy.

The ages of the female characters ranged from five to twenty-two. Source.

ALSO, AHHHHHH
When I volunteered to help with Archive of Our Own, the Final Fantasy sections were very tiny and not busy. Now they have exploded, and things are a mess, and our Final Fantasy megafandom team is pretty overwhelmed. As one member of that team, well, my thoughts bounce back and forth between "AHHHHHHHHHHHH" and "*gives up forever*", because well, I am doing lots of tag wrangling leader business in the time I used to do wrangling, and it's hard to fit both in. I am a terrible, no-good, irresponsible wrangler. ;__;

Final Fantasy has a megafandom team! We are small and need more members who:

- like to sort things
- enjoy nerdy spreadsheets
- can work cooperatively
- like debates about structure of tags

There's a learning curve to get up to speed on policies but there are lots of folks to help you get started (like me!). Fandoms that definitely need more than one wrangler so the three wranglers that know it don't keel over from burnout include:

Compilation of Final Fantasy VII (any and all canons)
Final Fantasy X & X-2
Ivalice Alliance (any and all canons)
Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy XIII (just FFXIII right now, but it's never too early to suck people in!)

All other Final Fantasy canons are also open to multiple wranglers, too, so we can all float around and help each other (and we really need to). It's pretty easy to wrangle the fandom into submission, but policies change, tags have to be brought in line, people retag their work, etc.. There are also tons of fandoms outside Final Fantasy to work on, too! At most, we ask for an hour a week if you're not carrying a lot of fandoms, so it is totally low-pressure.

If you're interested, you can swing by volunteers and recruiting form and let us know you're interested in wrangling. *sparkles*
Because I have it.

I think [personal profile] justira mentioned this to me back when it occurred and it didn't stick, from [livejournal.com profile] ff_press, Biggest FF community closed. Someone else irked! I am not the only one.

Like I said to [livejournal.com profile] heebee, I just find things like this, when done by moderators of huge communities (I am assuming that it was the moderators and not Livejournal which might be a mistake, but I am making it), it's just mean spirited and short-sighted. Any community, even defunct, has value to our fandom as a culture. It's our past, our fun and our experiences in posts and threads and comments and to delete something that was built on joint effort seems to me the antithesis of what fandom is about.

Although I readily admit that I have weird ideas about history. Comes with being a historian. A quirk, let's say.

To sum up:

Everyone is probably well aware that OpenID users cannot leave comments with links in them that work and this harshes my reccing buzz? When I want to do PROJECTS? I have already resigned myself to not using polls because I am too global (sigh) and now link dumping in the comments is off the table! This is unfortunate, but I am determined. My solution consisted of: listening to "The Climb" on repeat while I weighed my options, because I am an awesome person who likes Miley Cyrus. Surprise! I was rewarded with the answer by the second chorus. I am not ashamed; I used to roller-skate to Achy Breaky Heart and debate philosophy as a circled the rink — this is the circle of my Southern life. I am the hillbilly Mufusa. Haters to the left!

Today at midnight I will officially be within the bounds of summer vacation; this will mark my Three Months of Awesome project, where I do things I think are a) awesome and b) that I have wanted to do but couldn't because of school/work. One of these projects is about recommendations, but unfortunately I used up all my (dubious) creativity naming [community profile] megaflare_ff, so there is no catchy title. Reccing is awesome! It's also a lot of work. I love recommendations and have hatched a plan to acquire more, by taking it slow and offering to do most of the work.

My question is this: can you think of some awesome Final Fantasy fanwork you've see recently that you've really enjoyed?

How To Take ACTION:

1) Think of a Final Fantasy fanwork you've liked and want to share.
2) Acquire the form and fill in the fields that are required (many are optional for the lurker in us all.)
3) Wait until the next Friday for the REVEAL.
4) Profit! And by "profit" I mean "read/watch things!"

I feel a case of SUCCESS coming on.
» I played about two hours of Final Fantasy XIII today. minor spoilers about some boss/other battles )

» The Final Fantasy Big Bang will be called Mega Flare! The end! I am not sure I promoted this when it was in the initial stages, but now that the follow-up post is ready I will start shaking my pom-poms! I am ridiculously excited about the story I am writing and have been sketching tons of ideas and already stressing about how to subtly integrate sexy times so I am not BANISHED FROM THE HEARTS of my S/Z pals. If I have time this summer I am definitely going to do some replaying. I know our fandoms don't produce tons of long fic in one go, but I don't read chaptered fic at all anymore! I am greedy and I admit it! I love the idea of it enough that I somehow managed to convince [livejournal.com profile] owlmoose that it would be an excellent idea to co-mod, so hey! Even if she didn't like the title Phoenix Rising. *g*

» Oh man, I have so many great comments on my last post. <3 I am still considering some of the replies. It turned into session on writing well, which wasn't really my intention, but is useful. :D I am really concerned with character growth lately! Maybe it's all this analyzation I'm doing of text. Six years of close reading video games and some books have produced a canon source nerd! Why yes, I believe I will take various lines from the game and use them as a basis for an epic story in which Seifer and Zell are inadvertently attached at the mind—with a happy ending! I am a pairing nerd, oh well! At least I own it.

» I think I am thinking more about relationships because in my novel course, we're just about to wrap up The End of the Affair by Graham Greene. I really enjoyed this book. I need to do a close reading response over it, although I haven't decided a topic yet. I feel like doing something over space — the space between people physically, emotionally and mentally. Space plays a really important role — between people and God! However, my thoughts have not yet pooled into something I can get a thesis from, although I can think of plenty of evidence. *g* Maybe some spoilers in this and maybe not, but I tried to keep it vague. Some thoughts about The End of the Affair )

I might read Graham Green again, although I am glad that our next novel is White Teeth and by a woman. Honestly? I really wish that this professor taught Women Writers, I would be all up in that. However, I am fairly sure another professor has that claimed, and I've taken her from Intro to Fiction and she bores me and never liked any of my awesome ideas. Alas, alas.

» You Belong With Me. Now with more gay! from feministing. Now, I am not Taylor Swift fan (nor am I an apologist — damn, she SURELY has people around her that could say, "Hey, maybe singing a sing that plays into tired sexist stereotypes isn't so great!"), but when you frame this song like this I am...well, I am not crazy about the lyrics because the other girl is still getting short shrift, but what can you do.

Honestly, the first time I watched this I just sat, gaping. Then I watched it again and again and again. Sometimes people wonder why I am a slasher, and this video, the bit on the park bench? WELL THAT RATHER SUMS IT UP FOR ME OKAY. I will underline that moment right there, that tenderness, when for my entire childhood the dudes were defined by how hard they could hit shit (girls included!). Ha ha, apparently I have a kink for the dudes to get in touch with their soft side. I am okay with this.

but where were the makeouts, she asks. D:

Meanwhile, dude, I want this as a YA novel! PLEASE GIVE. How many love stories between het couples take place between a girl and boy who live across from each other and can see into the room of the other? There is a void. It needs to be filled. Bonus if one of the boy/girls is a werewolf. Or a zombie. Lesbian werewolves YA. Someone write me that.

» Just in case you are not tired of me talking about it yet: Final Fantasy Exchange signups! Tell all your friends! I am seeing all these prompts and getting ridiculously excited. I am still considering my own and feel like raiding the Chocobo Down lists from the last two round. >.>

If you don't feel confident enough to be locked into exchanging, there's always signing up to be a pinch-hitter, which is a no-obligation way to get the chance to create a gift, if a prompt goes out you like (you get to see it before you claim it!). Pinch hitters are incredibly important, and we learned that lesson last round, so if you feel like just signing up on the chance that something you might feel strongly about might come up, join us! There's also Moogle Fluff, which is a really low-pressure way to get involved at the end of the exchange, no sign-ups required. :D Lots of ways to take part! *waves FFEX flag* Seriously, it's going to be a great round and we'd love to have everyone!

» I am both excited and concerned about the possibility of a A Wrinkle in Time adaptation (I never saw the TV series). I feel like this would be a really, really hard movie to pull off well, without making it a big spectacle (especially during the climax). Also, the comments point out it might get the same hack treatment The Golden Compass did (boo hiss) and that's always a concern. But, oh, the kid in me who read these books yearns for a good film adaptation. Seriously, so much of my identity right now is tied up in the second book, A Wind in the Door, the Echthroi, Naming, Unnaming, and A Wrinkle in Time started it all. How many times did I check that book out from the elementary library I will never, ever know.

» "The Test" (Star Trek, reboot + TOS) is a vid I got linked to through my network. I don't watch a lot of vids; the format does less for me than fic or art. Okay, okay, and also the culture makes me feel really dumb because vidders are doing really fascinating things with language and imagery and technique that forms this mass of AWESOME that is so very hard for me to untangle unless what the creator is doing operates by reaching out and punching me in the nose. I'm sorry! I am not enlightened about vids. I accept recs for really great vids for People Who Are Vid Dumb. This one, though, this one I get, and oh, man, that ending! I have never watched one episode of TOS but the ending to this gave me chills.
Dear Final Fantasy fandom,

Hey there! Do you know what we haven't done in entirely too long?

No, no, not wanked over female characters or the relative masculinity of various male leads! I would like us to put all of that in the past until next week when Square Enix announces that Sephiroth/Zack is definitely, without a doubt canon. THEY WERE TOTALLY DOING IT IN THE BARRACKS.

HOWEVER. That's next week! This week I want to talk about love! You know—love! I have it! You have it! We all have it! And we share that love with the fic we read and write and spread around via recs, we share it despite liking different characters, liking different pairings, enjoying gen or het or slash more than anything else. We share it despite our differences in opinion on fanon or terminology or game mechanics-as-written-in-fic. Some of us even share the fear of SURPRISE STORIES ABOUT POOP*. Here are some of the things we love:

1) Touchstone stories! Stories that became the basis of fanon, of a pairing, of concept—even if it looks silly to our weathered, fandom cynical eyes. We loved it then; and we can still look on it fondly! These stories are warm, often clunky, but well-weathered and the best link we have to our past.

2) The new arrivals! Stories that we know we're going to love for years and years to come, that we're going to add to our bookmarks, or our delicious, that we're going to painstakingly save on our computers and flash drives, that we're going to show to new and old friends to tempt them into writing our favorite thing ever!

Final Fantasy XIII comes out soon, and with it comes a whole slew of new tropes and writing styles and fans and fan wars and wanks over pairings. I would like to take this time, this month before the onslaught of NEW AND SHINY begins, to look back over where we've come from, where we've been; our future is coming, but it's not here yet. Nerdy reminiscing: engaged!

Share your favorite stories! Leave them in the comments, make posts about them and leave those links in the comments. Post multiple comments! As many stories as you can, as many as you've loved, old and new: share them all. Talk about why you loved them, or don't. Write essays, or just write sentences. Link far and wide. Our stories are our history and our history is about to change once more, so let's celebrate on the eve of it, hold our loved stories high, bring our friends to the party, and hope that sharing an obscure favorite we had forgotten about entices them to write more of it.

Bring your stories. Come and dance. \o/

*If you have to ask, you don't want to know. Trust me.

etaDreamwidth currently doesn't respect OpenID comments with links in them, so if that's a problem for you (and I don't really blame you because I am also NOT PLEASED), have an OPTIONAL SIDEQUEST: make your own post! Include all your recs, and drop by and give me the link and I will put it here at the bottom for people to go see. <3 <3 <3
I spent six hours? seven? prepping [livejournal.com profile] ff_exchange documents so signups could be open today and people could start helping us promote (really, because we totally forgot about promoting so um, pretty please?). In totally expected news, we didn't actually get any less tl;dr, but it was easier to post the sign-ups and link to all our documentation for people who felt they might need it instead of spamming friends lists with a bunch of entries with mounds of text. FFEX: open for business! Go sign up. Bring your friends. The deadline to sign up is June 19th.

Last time I took part I wrote a 17,000 word story. So maybe let's not do that this round. Sev is promising possible extra Chocobo Down for advertising and bringing friends into the fold! We can't pass up that offer, even if it means me having to wait even longer for Seifer/Irvine rockstar AU. *tears*
